space elevator: an idea whose time has arrived

space elevator: an idea whose time has arrived Has the advent of carbon nanotubes delivered a space elevator into the realm of reality? Momentum is mounting for research on a 22,000 mile elevator ride. The cost of getting into space, would fall below $100 per pound. Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, father of theoretical rocketry, inspired by the new Eiffel Tower while teaching in Paris, first conceived of a Space elevator in the 1890s. Arthur C Clarke helped popularize the idea in his seventies sci-fi novel, "The Fountains of Paradise". Clarke sees a present obstacle to making a space elevator practical in an interview here: space debris. NOVA provides an excellent video on the Space elevator here. There are forward-thinking artists who are creating a new genre of Space elevator music, it's something for the long ride.
