sam cohen: father of neutron bomb dead at 89
Tony Rennell explores in Mail Online article, "Was this man behind the most immoral weapon of all time?", the views of physicist Sam Cohen, the father of the neutron bomb, who died Sunday at age 89. Cohen invented the bomb in the fifties by minimizing the initial blast and increasing amounts of generated radiation. "He [Cohen] continued to maintain that his neutron bomb was ‘the most sane and moral weapon ever devised. It’s the only nuclear weapon in history that makes sense in waging war because, when the war is over, the world is still intact’". Cohen's bomb still raises moral questions for those who hold the dogma of "mutually assured destruction". The neutron bomb could hypothetically tempt one side to make a successful first strike.
